Back to School: Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pains

With the return to school that happens at the end of the summer, the possibility for muscle aches and pains increases for those who go to classes. If you are experiencing discomfort, contact Capitol Rehab of Crofton to make an appointment with our chiropractor for an assessment. Here are some ailments students suffer from when they go back to school, ways to avoid discomfort, and what our chiropractor can do to help when it occurs.

Common Conditions Students Experience

Many students use backpacks to carry their belongings around while at school. This places stress upon the upper back, shoulders, and neck, leading to pain in these areas. Excessive cell phone or laptop use can lead to a condition known as "text neck," which leads to neck pain. Sitting for excessive time periods can also lead to muscle pain.

How to Avoid Discomfort at School

It is best to select a backpack with large straps for support and to avoid shoulder pain. Do not place too much weight in a backpack and make sure it is distributed evenly to help avoid back pain. Take frequent breaks when using a laptop and monitor your cell phone usage. Use a timer to alert you when to look away or invest in a stand to keep your device at eye level.

It is wise to stretch your body at routine intervals when you sit for an extended period. Stretch each leg and move it around for a few seconds. Repeat with the arms. If possible, stand and walk around to get your blood circulating after sitting for a long duration of time.
