What is Spinal Decompression?

At Capitol Rehab of Crofton, we are pleased to offer our patients spinal decompression. We do admit that the name can sound intimidating. Today, learn what spinal decompression is and why we sometimes recommend it for our patients with back pain.

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression contains the words "compression" and "decompress." So you see, it is a treatment that is designed to decompress something that has become compressed and no longer functions normally. In this case, it is your spine.

Every time you walk, sit, lift something, or engage in other activities, your spine takes a beating. If healthy alignment is not restored, the spinal vertebrae sink down into one another, becoming compressed. As this occurs, you may begin to feel pain or inflammation associated with the compression. If you do nothing to treat the condition, things can get so bad that one of your discs slips out of place or bulges.

At this point, conventional doctors like to recommend back surgery. Our chiropractor knows that with the right treatment (decompression) space can be created to reverse your situation. Then you can heal naturally, without needing to have back surgery or suffer through a long recovery.

When Do We Recommend Spinal Decompression?

We told you that spinal decompression works to treat back pain, but not all cases of back pain. We generally recommend this treatment method for our patients who complain of:

  • Sciatica
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Sharp (acute) lower back pain
  • Posterior facet syndrome
  • Slipped disc
  • Herniated disc
  • Bulging disc

All of our treatments are holistic and individualized. This means we always try to identify the right treatment for you - the one that will bring optimal healing. If we do not recommend spinal decompression, know that we are recommending the right treatment for your unique needs.
