How common is lower back pain?

According to epidemiological studies, about 4 out of 5 people (80%) will have at least one experience over the course of their lives. Lower back often a common problem we treat at our clinic.

What are typical symptoms associated with lower back pain?

Low back pain is often constant, dull, tender, and achy. It can get better or worse depending on the time of day or type of movement, and occasionally may feel sharp, stabbing, or shooting.

Low back pain can also radiate down into the right or left buttocks and leg. This is generally suggestive of referred pain from osteoarthritis or a compressed nerve in the lumbar spine (which can also present with leg numbness, tingling, and weakness).

What causes lower back pain?

Certain factors are associated with lower back pain:

  • Advancing age (particularly between the age of 30-50, though the incidence tends to drop off after about 65)
  • Physically demanding jobs and frequent heavy lifting
  • Sitting too much
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Psychological stress
  • A personal and/or family history of low back pain
  • Acute trauma (auto accident injury, sports injury, personal injury)

Some specific diagnoses we see include muscle spasms, osteoarthritis, disc bulge or herniation, stenosis, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease, fibromyalgia, and sciatica.

What can I do about my lower back pain?

We advise consulting with a doctor of physical therapy, doctor of chiropractic, or another holistic healthcare professional who can provide natural relief and teach you ways to manage and prevent symptoms. Strategies may include implementing a sustainable exercise and weight loss program, improving your ergonomics, and performing daily at home exercises to strengthen your core and stretch shortened hip and leg muscles, which often contribute to lower back dysfunction.

What can I expect for lower back pain treatment with a chiropractor?

We provide a variety of drug-free services for lower back pain treatment, including innovative techniques like:

  • Body weight support treadmill training (anti-gravity treadmill) and other corrective exercises
  • Acupuncture
  • Spinal decompression
  • Chiropractic adjustments

Together, these services will do everything from reducing pain and inflammation, facilitate faster tissue healing, correct spinal joint alignment, relieve pressure on discs and nerves, and increase core strength and endurance.
