Shoulder Pain

At Capitol Rehab of Crofton, Dr. Shaun McClenny DC CCSP is available to discuss your shoulder pain with you. If you are suffering from chronic or acute shoulder pain, due to an auto accident, injury, or disease, we'll work with you to find the best possible treatment plan for your needs. With a licensed sports chiropractor and physical therapist available, you'll get comprehensive care in a holistic, noninvasive manner.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Our first step is to understand the cause of your shoulder pain. We'll use x-rays and other diagnostic testing to determine what could be at the heart of your pain. Some of the most common conditions we see include the following:

Dislocated Shoulder: In this condition, the upper portion of the shoulder slips out of the socket. This can happen rather easily since this is one of the largest and most flexible joints in your body. Dislocated shoulders require immediate help, but chronic pain can develop without proper alignment.

Shoulder Bursitis: Within the shoulder socket are small sacs filled with fluid. They fit into the socket and joint just right to allow for there to be movement of the joint without abrasion to the nearby bone. When these sacs become inflamed, it can cause significant pain.

Frozen Shoulder: This condition is common in those who hold their shoulder in a specific position for a long period of time. For example, if you've had surgery and your shoulder has not moved much, this can cause it to stiffen up. It can become painful to move it.

Rotator Cuff Injury: This cuff of muscles and tendons helps to keep the upper arm bone in the shoulder socket properly. When an injury here occurs, it can create an aching feeling, which worsens most commonly when you sleep.

Muscle Strains, Sprains, & Tendinitis: Overuse, misuse, or injury can occur to the muscles and tendons present in the shoulder joint. When this happens, it can cause stretching or tearing of the tissues, causing significant pain.

Shoulder Pain Treatment from Your Chiropractor

Our goal is to provide comprehensive shoulder pain treatment based on your symptoms. When you meet with your chiropractor in our office, we'll make recommendations that fit your needs. They may include:

Physical Therapy: Our physical therapist will work with you to encourage the muscles, tendons, and ligaments to heal. We want to encourage your shoulder to operate in the proper manner and to strengthen the tissues here.

Chiropractic Adjustments: Adjustments help us to properly align the joint. This can reduce many of the symptoms you have because it takes pressure off the nerves in this area.

Acupuncture: In some cases, acupuncture can help to reduce the pain you feel. It works to speed up the natural healing process in the impacted area.

We may also recommend massage therapy, sports nutrition, and other types of treatment designed to address the underlying cause of your pain.
