What Causes Shoulder Pain?

Regular shoulder pain might mask deeper issues. Shoulder pain exists due to muscle tears, osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and several other causes.

The shoulder consists of three bones: the humerus, the scapula, and the clavicle. Combined, they constitute movement throughout the arm. Your shoulder blade, collarbone, and top of your arm bone, respectively, allow for clean, no-friction rotation.

For this reason, even a small injury can result in pain throughout the entire shoulder. Also called deltoid pain, shoulder pain is very common. The shoulder’s complex anatomy simply makes it prone to wear-and-tear.

Rotator Cuff Injuries

A majority of shoulder pain is caused by damages to the rotator cuff. The four rotator cuff muscles are responsible for your shoulders movements. While they’re not used for lifting heavy things, they’re critical for everyday use. Rotator cuffs are prone to the following injuries:

  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Rotator cuff tears

These injuries are caused by your rotator cuff’s bursa—a fluid-filled area within—wearing down. Tendonitis, in particular, can result in lost rotation and overall capabilities. Normally painful during activities like throwing, reaching or lifting, rotator cuff tendonitis can spawn, seemingly, from nothing at all.

Protecting Your Mobility

Where mobility is concerned, shoulder pain can cause great limitations. Adhesive capsulitis, or ‘frozen shoulder’ is a common condition resulting from such pains. If left unchecked, shoulder pain can progress to a crippling injury.
