Acupuncture FAQs

Acupuncture dates back to 2,000 years ago in China and has found increased popularity to treat a variety of different ailments in Crofton.

What Is Acupuncture?

The procedure uses needles inserted into points on the body called acupuncture points, in order to promote self-healing. According to traditional Chinese medicine, disruption of energy in the body is responsible for diseases and acupuncture helps release that flow so it returns to normal.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Sticking needles into the skin doesn’t sound very painless, but the needles used for acupuncture aren’t like ones that are used for drawing blood or other shots. The needs are as thin as a strand of hair. You may feel some sensation when the needles are inserted, but the process is not painful. While acupuncture may cause some sensation, it doesn’t hurt.

Does It Work?

There are many different studies that show acupuncture helps with pain relief. It can also be helpful in managing symptoms of cancer, such as diarrhea, constipation, hot flashes, fatigue, and nausea. There are also some clinical studies that show it can be used to treat hypertension, morning sickness, depression, and allergies.

What Conditions Does Acupuncture Help?

While acupuncture is best known to help with pain relief, there are other conditions that it helps treat as well. These include respiratory diseases, eye disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, neurological disorders, and orthopedic disorders.

Are There Risks to Acupuncture?

When acupuncture is performed by a licensed practitioner, there is little to no risk involved. Acupuncture is also performed using disposable, clean needles. Acupuncture complications that do happen come from non-licensed practitioners who aren’t using sterile needles.

How Often Do You Need Acupuncture?

How often you will need treatment will depend on the medical condition that you are treating. Some patients come weekly and many conditions respond to more frequent treatments. When the condition is stabilized, you won’t need to come in as often.

Can You Use Acupuncture with Other Pain Relief Treatments?

Always speak with a practitioner in order to make sure acupuncture is the right step in a pain relief treatment plan.
