Correct Jogging Posture

Jogging is great for your health. It can help manage your weight, tone your muscles, keep your heart healthy, and much more. However, if you have bad posture while jogging, it can negatively impact the spine, muscles, nerves, and ligaments. And each of these components can impact your overall health. That’s why the team at Capitol Rehab of Crofton – your Bowie, Crofton, Gambrills, and Odenton chiropractor – wants to provide you with the tips you need to maintain proper posture while jogging.

How to Avoid Bad Posture While Jogging

Maintaining a good posture while jogging doesn’t have to be difficult. However, if you normally run with bad posture, it might take some time to get accustomed to proper form. Keeping these tips in mind can help.

Start With the Spine and Pelvis

Your spine should be upright, but not so much that it’s stiff. Find a neutral spine and pelvis, meaning it’s all straightened and aligned but not painfully so. This should result in a small curve in the back that feels natural.

Engage Your Core

This step can help in a few ways. For one, it can help keep your posture as it should be. It also helps stabilize your body for your jog.

Mind Your Neck and Shoulders

Always keep your shoulders rolled back. Once they begin to roll forward, your upper spine will follow suit. Also, keep your head looking forward so that there is no unnecessary pressure on your neck.

Don’t Forget the Arms

Your arms are supposed to support you during your run – not propel you forward. Don’t keep your hands too tight or cross them over your body as you run.

Your Legs Matter, Too

The way your legs move and how you land can impact your posture. Moreover, your posture can affect how you move and land. The goal is to not lift your legs too high and to aim for a mid-foot strike.
