Understanding Migraines and How a Chiropractor can Help

Migraines come in different types and have different causes, but science still doesn't have a good understanding of what makes them happen in the first place. Prescription migraine pain relievers are effective; however, they can create an unwanted dependency on their use. At Capitol Rehab of Crofton, our chiropractor can give you an evaluation and help you get relief from your migraine pain. Here's a look at different types of migraines and their symptoms.

Common Types of Migraines

Migraine without aura is the most common type of migraine. This type affects up to 90 % of migraine sufferers and can last up to 72 hours at a time. Symptoms include pulsing or throbbing pain on one side of the head which intensifies during walking or going upstairs. Nausea and sensitivity to light and sound are also common symptoms.

Migraine with aura is the second most common type of migraine, affecting anywhere from 10 to 30% of sufferers. Someone experiencing migraine with aura will have all the symptoms of a non-aura migraine, but also experience visual complications that include flashing lights, colored dots or spots, blind spots in the visual field, stars, tunnel vision, and flashing lights. Temporary blindness can also occur.

Chronic migraines are defined as experiencing migraine pain for more than 15 days a month over a period of three months without the use of medication for relief. If the pain lasts less than 15 days each month, it's considered an episodic migraine. This type of migraine affects about 1% of the population and treatment is limited to short-term relief via a specific type of pain reliever. If you experience chronic migraines and are looking for alternative treatment options, it's a good idea to consult with a chiropractor about the potential for pain relief prior to starting a course of treatment.
